Breed History
Tibetan Spaniels once sat upon the walls of Buddhist monasteries, acting as alert sentries who barked at a stranger's approach. Not only did the dogs keep watch over their homes, they also became appreciated gifts at Buddhist palaces across China. Perhaps this gift-giving practice explains the dog's ancestral link with the Japanese Chin and Pekingese, two other commonly traded dogs.
Believing that no spiritual difference existed between people and dogs, the Tibetan monk owners treated their pets with great care. The close relationship between Tibetan Spaniels and modern families today may reflect this ancient bond.
