Breed History
Although still considered a rare breed, the Tibetan Mastiff has existed for many centuries, perhaps as early as the 13th century. Marco Polo wrote about huge Mastiffs that may have been the Tibetan variety. Regarded as the ancestor to many popular working dogs such as the Newfoundland, Saint Bernard and Kuvasz, these very large dogs have long guarded homes and flocks.
Originally bred and raised in the Himalayas, they have changed little over the years because of their isolation and the way their bodies and temperaments perfectly suited their function. Today, a Tibetan Mastiff will still reach a very large size and maintain a strong protective instinct. They are loyal, loving pets and companions.
