One of the oldest and most popular breeds, Siamese cats lived in Thailand as early as the 14th century. Perhaps residents of the ancient city of Ayudha, these cats appear in the Cat-Book Poems from 1350 C.E. Rescued from an ancient Siamese library, the book depicts thin-bodied cats with pointed coats that strongly resemble the modern breed. International exports of these cats began in the late 19th century.
True Siamese cats have light coats with chocolate, seal, lilac or blue colored points. A British breeding program, however, created other colors including red, cream and lynx cats displaying these colors constitute a seprate breed known as Colorpoint Shorthairs.
