Breed History
The Samoyed sports a beautiful white coat that resembles the snow of its native Siberia. Despite the elegant appearance, however, the breed has survived a challenging history. The dogs once followed nomadic herders, tending the reindeer and pulling heavy sleds across icy terrain. In the face of multiple challenges, the dogs still displayed their famous "smile" and cheerful, willing personalities.
"Sammys" even accompanied Roald Amundsen on a trek to the South Pole. Although they have adapted to frozen conditions, these dogs can live in balmier climates all over the world. They are friendly and active.
