Mentioned in Norse mythology and Scandinavian fairy tales, the Norwegian Forest Cat traces a long history. Known as a Skogatt in its native Norway, this hearty feline developed in dense woodlands beginning as early as the 16th century. Perhaps a cross between Angoras imported on trading ships and local shorthairs, this cat's ancestry still remains a mystery.
Serious breeding efforts in Osio during the 1930's helped standardize the breed, which has gained popularity aound the globe ever since. Although the Norwegian Forest Cat can wear nearly any coat color(except for a pointed pattern), it always possesses distinctive greenish-gold eyes.
