Breed History

Unlike many breeds, the Leonberger can trace its origin to a specific year. In Leonberg Germany during 1846, the mayor crossed Great Pyrenees, St. Bernards and Landseer Newfoundland in an effort to create a dog that resembled the Lion adorning the city flag. The mix was successful, though most of the dogs perished during war service in the 20th century. Strict breeding programs with the remaining stock, however, revived the breed.

Also known as Leos, these large dogs remain common in Europe and have gained great popularity in the United States since their introduction in 1971. They love water and outdoor activities, children and focused responsibilities. They often work as therapy, tracking and pulling dogs, and live as loyal and mellow pets.
