Breed History

The Komondor's heavy, corded coat has protected the dog for over one thousand years. At first encounter with a potential enemy, the dog's generous size intimidated the opponent, then the coat shielded vulnerable body parts from physical attack. Although intelligent and strong, Komondors rarely herded for their Magyar masters, serving as protectors and companions instead.

They remain loyal and even-tempered in disposition, but will fight successfully when provoked. Despite its ancient history, the breed maintains a very pure line, due to minimal crossbreeding and careful preservation by generations of owners.
