Breed History

The English Springer Spaniel's original job description included "springing" game and birds from hiding places, and the name underscores the importance of this hunting role. Throughout their early development, these dogs shared many characteristics with the English Cocker Spaniel. In 1902, however, the Kennel Club of England separated the two breeds, mainly because of the Springer's large size.

Today they serve as hunting dogs, demonstrating endurance and obedience. One of the largest Spaniels, with a powerful build and tough feet, they can safely cover all types of terrain. As show dogs, their long, glossy coats distinguish them as fine competitors.
