Breed History
What country does the word "spaniel" bring to mind? Despite its name, the English Cocker Spaniel originally came from 14th century Spain. Modern breed developments occurred later in England. The word "Cocker" probably derives from the woodcock, a prized bird that was frequently hunted there.
The breed developed alongside the Springer Spaniel, and later initiated the American Cocker Spaniel line. The distinct pedigree of the English dog became established in 1941. These dogs exhibit great energy and a love of the outdoors.
