Breed History
The ancestor of the Dogue de Bordeaux, the French Molossus, certainly existed as early as the 14th century. The very large Dogue was originally bred for fighting other dogs or bears and boar. They traveled to England for fighting and show competition toward the end of the 19th century, though their popularity as a competititor diminished rapidly.
With the legal ban on fighting, the dogs were bred for better conformation and temperament. They are distinguished by several physical characteristics including very large and wrinkly heads, gigantic teeth, muzzles and nostrils, as well as huge limbs. Despite their enormous girth, the dogs of this rare, old breed have earned their owner's affection through loyalty and devotion.
