Breed History

The American Bulldog strongly resembles its English Bulldog cousin, which is more commonly known simply as the Bulldog. Although the American breed is somewhat larger in size, both types of dog have performed important work throughout history. Long bred for effectiveness rather than appearance, these very strong dogs maintained and guarded cattle. The dogs were expected to prevent straying, defend against wolves and protect the human companions from any attack. Until bull-baiting was outlawed, they also participated in this "sport."

As the need for cattle protection diminished in the late 19th century, the dogs remained farm hands, guardians and companions. While some breeders have emphasized appearance in recent decades, true programs still maintain the old physical type that possesses endurance, agility and speed. The dogs remain hearty and devoted pets who require physical activity and space.
